Ray started their career in 1981 as the Director of Finance and Administration at Wang Labs, Federal Systems Division. Ray then worked at Sprint International as the Controller for Network Systems and Product Development from 1986 to 1989. Following this, they joined Memorex Telex as a Controller from 1989 to 1994.

In 1994, Ray founded Colonial Financial Services, a firm specializing in financing for leasing IT equipment and software. During their time there, the company had a major client, Sun Microsystems Federal, and provided leasing services for their demo and evaluation equipment inventory.

In 2004, Ray founded Blue Ridge Systems, a business focused on selling IT hardware and providing high-quality support in the Federal space.
