Ty Phelps is an accomplished writer and educator currently serving as Writer-in-Residence at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond since September 2023 and as an Adjunct Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University since August 2021. Phelps has received recognition as a Cabell First Novelist Award Fellow and has extensive teaching experience, having held adjunct professor positions at Randolph-Macon College and Reynolds Community College. With a background in secondary education, Phelps has served as an English teacher and writing consultant, focusing on student engagement and curriculum development. Phelps holds a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Virginia Commonwealth University, an M.A.T. in English Language Arts from Lewis & Clark College, and a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Carleton College.

Visual Arts Center of Richmond
The Visual Arts Center of Richmond has helped adults and children explore their creativity and make great art since 1963, when the organization was founded as the Hand Workshop. Today, VisArts is a 30,000-square-foot arts center that boasts 15 professional-grade art studios and the True F. Luck Gallery. Each year VisArts offers more than 700 visual and creative arts classes in clay, wood, fiber, painting, photography, printmaking, glass, metal, drawing, writing, decorative arts, and other visual media, as well as creative writing. The organization touches the lives of more than 32,000 people each year through its classes, exhibitions, community outreach programs, camps, workshops, and special events.
