Martha Dixon Akins

Senior Director at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Martha Dixon Akins has held a variety of positions throughout their career. Martha began as a Historic Designer at Patina Period Design in 2000 and then became the State Historic Sites Director at the Tennessee Historical Commission in 2008. That same year, they also began working as an Adjunct Professor at The Art Institute of TN-Nashville. In 2016, they were promoted to Senior Director at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

Martha Dixon Akins received their MA in Historic Preservation from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) between 1993 and 2000, and their BS in Interior Design from Auburn University between 1985 and 1989. Martha has also obtained certifications from 360 Training Ltd for the OSHA 10 Hour Outreach Training Program - General Industry in February 2022, from Miami-Dade County Emergency Management for Community Emergency Response Team in February 2019, a Certificate of Achievement: Preservation Leadership Training from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Construction Documents Technologist certification from The Constructions Specification Institute, and a Registered Interior Designer certification from the State of Tennessee.
