In this role, they represent the company as a Program Co-Lead for drug discovery programs with external partners, manages program goals, timelines, and budgets, and coordinates cross-functional and cross-company activities for one of Voyager's alliances.
Prior to their current role, Birgit worked at Biogen where they held multiple positions. Birgit started as a Research Scientist and later became a Senior Manager of Business Development Operations, providing operational and project management support for key opportunities in business development. Birgit was accountable for deal governance, tracking activities and documentation, and reporting requirements across multiple functions. Birgit also served as a Scientist II in the Translational Biology department, specializing in BBB biology and leading in vitro BBB work streams. Additionally, they worked as a Scientist I in the Disease Model Bioengineering Group, where they established a range of BBB platforms for drug screenings and MOA studies.
Before joining Biogen, Birgit worked as a Postdoctoral Scientist at the Neuroimmunology and Acute Neurology Research Unit, where they studied the structure and function of the blood-brain barrier using microphysiological systems. Birgit also worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Neuroinflammation Research Center in the Cleveland Clinic, focusing on leukocyte transmigration and chemokine aggregation in a flow-based in vitro model of the blood-brain barrier.
Birgit's early research experience includes a PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology, where they characterized oligoclonal antibodies in the cerebrospinal fluid of multiple sclerosis patients. Their findings were recognized with an award from the German Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Birgit also worked as a Research Assistant at the same institute, where they were responsible for mouse genotyping and assisted in image analysis assessing dendritic spine morphology in transgenic mice.
Birgit Obermeier completed their education in a chronological manner. Birgit pursued their Bachelor's Degree in Biology, specializing in General Biology, from the University of Regensburg between 2001 and 2003. Birgit then continued their studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, where they obtained a Master's Degree in Biology from 2003 to 2007. Furthering their academic journey, Birgit pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Neuroimmunology at the same institution, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, from 2007 to 2011.
