James Steffes

James Steffes is Senior Vice President, Regulatory. In his role, Mr. Steffes is responsible for establishing, communicating and executing on the company’s multi-state government relations and regulatory priorities across Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Throughout his career, Mr.Steffes has demonstrated a strong track record of bringing people together to achieve a strategic mission that serves consumers and stakeholders well. His experience will help support the company’s culture of driving operational excellence, delivering exceptional service for all customers and preparing for the low carbon future.

Mr. Steffes brings more than 25 years of experience in the energy sector. Most recently, he was the head of Direct Energy’s North American Corporate Affairs group responsible for all policy, market development, political engagement, media and communications as well as community affairs.

Before Direct Energy, he was CEO of Circular Energy, an innovative start-up bringing together solar development and installation with energy retail solutions.

Mr. Steffes has also worked at NRG Energy, where he was both the President of the Northeast Retail region as well as the President of Green Mountain Energy. In these roles, he was responsible for significantly expanding the market footprint, building new and creative brand propositions, and executing on a significant amount of M&A.

Mr.Steffes received his Master of Public Policy from Harvard University and his Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
