Richard J. Liekweg

Richard J. Liekweg is president and chief executive officer of BJC HealthCare, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit, integrated health care delivery organizations with $6.0 billion in net revenues and more than 31,000 employees serving the greater St. Louis, southern Illinois and mid-Missouri regions. BJC’s teaching hospitals, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, are affiliated with internationally renowned Washington University School of Medicine.

Liekweg joined BJC HealthCare in 2009 as president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and group president for BJC HealthCare. In addition to leading Barnes-Jewish Hospital, he was responsible for ensuring the success of four other BJC hospitals and chairing the steering committee for the 10-year Washington University Medical Center campus renewal project. In 2015, Liekweg was promoted to executive vice president and subsequently president of BJC. He was named president and chief executive officer in January 2018.

Before joining BJC, Liekweg served as chief executive officer and associate vice chancellor for the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center from 2003-2009. Liekweg also spent more than 16 years at Duke University Health System, including serving as chief executive officer of Durham Regional Hospital.

He currently serves on the boards of several professional and community boards, including Vizient, Washington University, Missouri Hospital Association, Cortex, St. Louis Regional Health Commission, Greater St. Louis, Inc., BioSTL, and Forest Park Forever.

Liekweg holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia and master’s degrees in health services administration and business administration, both from the University of Michigan.
