Charles J. Shanley

Charles Shanley, M.D., FACS, joined Wayne Health as president and chief executive officer in March 2018. Dr. Shanley also serves as professor of Surgery and vice dean for Clinical Affairs for the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

A Detroit native and practicing vascular surgeon, Dr. Shanley has served in a variety of senior executive, clinical, academic and entrepreneurial leadership roles throughout his career.

Previous executive roles include serving as senior vice president for Surgical Services, chair of surgery and co-medical director for Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. Dr. Shanley was subsequently promoted to senior vice president and associate chief medical officer for Beaumont Health. Other clinical and academic leadership roles included previous service as Vascular Surgery division chief and residency program director at the Detroit Medical Center and General Surgery program director at Beaumont Health.

Dr. Shanley also co-founded Medical Engineering Partners, an advanced bioengineering and medical device prototyping firm in 2010. A spin-off of that parent company, Seraph Biosciences, is commercializing a novel Raman spectroscopic diagnostic platform for real-time pathogen and agent detection at the point-of-care.

A distinguished fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery, Dr. Shanley currently serves on the Health Care Patient Safety and Quality Study Section of the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality. He has also served on the Circulatory Devices Advisory Panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Shanley’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Army’s Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Dr. Shanley earned his Doctor of Medicine (with distinction) and Bachelor of Science degrees (with highest distinction) from WSU. He completed vascular surgery, surgical critical care and general surgery residencies at the University of Michigan Health System (Michigan Medicine).
