Kira Olsen is currently a Data Science Engineer at WeaveGrid, a position they have held since 2021. Prior to this, they were a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center from 2019-2021, where they designed and deployed a convolutional neural network to double the number of seismic events detected on a polar ice shelf, and classified events for scientific analysis. Kira also extracted key geophysical parameters from large datasets using unsupervised-learning techniques including Gaussian Mixture Modeling and other clustering algorithms. Additionally, they conducted geophysical research into the structure and deformation of polar ice sheets using novel seismic methods. Before that, they were a Graduate Research Fellow at Columbia University in the City of New York from 2014-2019, where they conducted and published research on ice fracture and mass loss from Greenland's largest glaciers while pursuing their Ph.D. in Earth & Environmental Sciences. Kira was also a Geology Paraprofessional at Colorado College from 2011-2014, and an Education and Watershed Monitoring Intern at Cook Inletkeeper in 2011.
Kira Olsen has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Columbia University in Earth & Environmental Sciences (Seismology, Geophysics) from 2016-2019. Kira also has a Master of Arts (MA) from Columbia University in Earth & Environmental Science (Seismology, Geophysics) from 2014-2016. Lastly, they have a Bachelor of Arts from Colorado College in Geology, cum laude from 2007-2011.
