Sonja Gillert has a diverse background in journalism and media. Sonja started their career as a freelance journalist at Westfälische Rundschau in 2003. Sonja then worked as a freelance reporter and author at Deutsche Welle, focusing on the Middle East and Africa. Sonja also served as a production assistant for the radio play production "Learning by Ear." In 2010, they worked as a freelance reporter and author for WDR's children's news program "Klicker." Sonja also worked as a freelance reporter and radio author for Deutschlandradio, contributing to various radio programs including the children's program "Kakadu." In 2013, Sonja joined WeltN24 GmbH as a journalist and project manager in the Foreign Policy department, specializing in China and Iran. Sonja also led the development and editorial supervision of the German-English multimedia website "ÜberWasser" from 2015 to 2017. Sonja has international experience through their participation in the Robert Bosch Foundation Media Ambassador Program, where they spent three months reporting in China. Sonja also received a Visiting Journalist Fellowship through the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship, allowing their to support the Austin American-Statesman and report from the United States for Welt.

Sonja Gillert completed their education at various institutions over the years. From 2004 to 2009, they attended The University of Bonn, where they obtained a degree in Magistra Artium. Sonja'smain field of study was Political Science, with additional focus on Modern German Literature and the German Language. In 2007, they participated in an exchange program at the University of St Andrews, where they studied International Relations and German Literature. Subsequently, from 2011 to 2013, Sonja attended the Axel-Springer-Akademie, where they pursued a Volontariat program and earned a degree as a Redakteurin.
