Andrea Burgess

Research Director at Wessex Archaeology

Andrea Burgess first started working for Wessex Archaeology in 2010 as a fieldwork Project Manager for the Sheffield office. After a spell running the northern office’s newly formed Heritage Consultancy team, she started to specialize in post-excavation analysis, reporting, and publication in 2013. Andrea was appointed Research Director in 2016 and now leads the research, post-excavation, and finds teams across all of the offices.

She has had a varied and interesting career in archaeology and, after completing her degree in the subject, she worked as a fieldwork site assistant, progressing on to direct and manage excavations including large road schemes as well as writing and editing the resulting publications. Andrea also had a spell as county curator for West Yorkshire advising local planning authorities on archaeological issues as well as acting as a statutory consultee for a number of major infrastructure projects across the Yorkshire region. All this experience has given her a unique view of both commercial archaeology and a clear understanding of the needs of clients, consultants, and curators.

Andrea aims to make sure that their work is useful and helps to inform academics, researchers, and the wider public about their sites and discoveries. She is constantly looking for new ways of doing this. It’s amazing to work in an industry where new discoveries are made every day - it’s both challenging and motivating to keep improving their expertise, and their processes, techniques, and services.

When not working, Andrea enjoys walking, reading, and binge-watching boxsets.
