Peter Downes is a seasoned forensic professional with extensive experience in fingerprint analysis and management. Currently serving as a Technical Assessor for UKAS since February 2023, Downes has previously held key roles including Forensic Identification Manager at West Mercia Police and Tactical Advisor for Abu Dhabi Police, where significant contributions were made to forensic procedures and accreditation standards. Downes has also managed large teams at Cambridgeshire Constabulary as Head of the Fingerprint Department and supervised the Fingerprint Unit at Bermuda Police Service. Throughout a career spanning over two decades, Downes has demonstrated expertise in quality management, accreditation processes, and forensic technology, complemented by a BA (Hons) degree from the University of East Anglia.

West Mercia Police is the territorial police force responsible for policing the counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire (including Telford and Wrekin) and Worcestershire in England. The force area covers 2,868 square miles (7,430 km2) making it the fourth largest police area in England and Wales. The resident population of the area is 1.2 million. Whilst much of our area is rural, the conurbations we police include Hereford, Kidderminster, Shrewsbury, Telford, Redditch and Worcester. We tailor our policing to our communities, responding to issues that affect deprived urban areas as well as rural communities.
