Brian Mateer has extensive work experience in various roles within the United Methodist Church and educational institutions. Brian started their career as a High School Science Teacher at Danville City Public Schools in 1999. In the same year, they also served as the Head Women's Soccer Coach at Averett University until 2001. Following this, they joined First UMC-Martinsville, VA as the Director of Youth Ministries from 2001 to 2014. From 2014 to 2019, they worked as the Director of Missions at providence united methodist church charlotte nc. Simultaneously, they served as the Chair of the Mission Engagement Team at WNCC UMC from 2017 to 2019. In 2017, they became the Director of the St Johns Campus (a multicultural worship community) at Providence United Methodist Church until 2019. From 2019 to 2022, they held multiple roles at Western North Carolina Conference UMC, including Associate Director of Missional Engagement and Conference Disaster Response Coordinator. Currently, they are the Director of Missional Engagement at Western North Carolina Conference UMC.
Brian Mateer completed their Bachelor's degree in Biology, General from Averett University between 1995 and 1999. Brian then pursued a Professional Certification in Youth Ministry at Wesley Theological Seminary from 2009 to 2011. Lastly, they obtained a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Practical Theology from Pfeiffer University, where they studied from 2015 to 2018.
