Professor Smita Shah Oam

Professor Smita Shah OAM has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of health promotion and research. Professor Smita started their career in 1995 at the Western Sydney Local Health District, where they served as the Director of the Prevention Education and Research Unit (PERU). In this role, they focused on developing and implementing health promotion programs aimed at managing and preventing chronic diseases. Professor Smita played a key role in the development of flagship programs such as the Adolescent Asthma Action (Triple A) program and the Students As LifeStyle Activists (SALSA) program, both of which targeted young people and communities. In 2011, they joined the University of Sydney as a Clinical Professor, further contributing to the field of health education and research. In 2017, they became an Associate at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, where they continued their work in the field. Additionally, they have also served as an Associate at the Centre for Managing Chronic Disease at the University of Michigan starting from 2003. Overall, Professor Smita Shah OAM has made significant contributions to health promotion and research throughout their career.

Professor Smita Shah OAM completed their Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree in Medicine at the University of Glasgow in 1977. Professor Smita then pursued a Graduate Diploma of Community Health at the University of Sydney, which they completed in 1992. Following that, they obtained a Master of Community Health degree from the University of Sydney in 1994.
