MaryAnn Bin-Sallik

MaryAnn is a member of the Djaru people of the East Kimberley, Western Australia. She has a Masters' Degree in Education Administration, a Doctorate in Teaching and Learning from Harvard University and qualifications in Social Work and Nursing. She was the first Aboriginal to work in the higher education sector in 1975 when she was employed to work in the first Indigenous higher education program and has been involved with this sector ever since, working in various academic and administrative positions in South Australia, the Northern Territory and New South Wales. On her retirement from Charles Darwin University in 2008 she was made an Emeritus Professor. She was the Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous Leadership at Western Sydney University from 1 July to 31st December 2015.

In January 2017 MaryAnne was recognised as an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for her distinguished service to tertiary education as an academic, author and administrator, particularly in the area of Indigenous studies and culture, and as a role model and mentor. Also in 2017, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of South Australia for her contribution to Indigenous higher education in Australia.
