Billy O'Brien

Chief Mate at Western Towboat Company

Billy O'Brien has extensive experience working in the maritime industry. Billy started their career in 2001 as a Mate for SpiritLine Cruises and Fort Sumter Tours, where they eventually became a Captain. Billy was responsible for operating various vessels and assisting in the delivery and refitting of the Spirit of the Lowcountry. In 2009, Billy joined Lindblad Expeditions as a Chief Mate, overseeing vessel security, safety, medical operations, and the deck department. Billy also operated the vessel in all weather conditions and stood 8 hours of bridge watch daily. In 2018, Billy joined Western Towboat Company as a Chief Mate, primarily involved in long-haul towing and providing essential services to Alaska. Billy also participated in various other trips, such as moving a wave generator and ship lightering.

Billy O'Brien attended Academic Magnet High School from 2001 to 2005, where they pursued a general course of study. Billy then enrolled at the College of Charleston in 2005 and completed their studies in Biology in 2006. In terms of additional certifications, Billy obtained the Divemaster certification from PADI in June 2016 and the 1600 Master Near Coastal and Master of Towing certifications from the U.S. Coast Guard in August 2021.
