Lou-Chang Lee

Professor Lee is an Academician, Distinguished Research Fellow, and Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences at Academia Sinica. He is also the Li Kwoh Ting Chair Professor at the National Central University, Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), and Elected Member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA).

Professor Lee specializes in space science and plasma physics. He has received many honors, including the

Fulbright Distinguished Scholar, and the Presidential Science Prize (the highest honor in science in Taiwan).

As of March 2016, Professor Lee has published more than 230 journal papers (over 7300 citations), as well as three academic monographs. During his career, he has developed several new theories to explain observed space phenomena. His major research achievements include the cyclotron master theory, the formation mechanism of solar prominences, a new mechanism for solar coronal heating, and the discovery of “gigantic jets” in the Earth’s upper atmosphere.
