Luke O'Neill has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Luke currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer at Wilderness Medical Associates International since November 2020. In the past, they served as the Lead Instructor at Northwest Outward Bound School starting from July 2007. Luke also worked as the Program Manager & Facilitator - Professional Programs at Hurricane Island Outward Bound School from October 2008 to November 2020. Additionally, Luke O'Neill founded and served as the President of Brilliant Light Studios, a photographic services company, from March 2008 to November 2020. Luke was also the Program Manager at Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding from May 2011 to October 2015 and the Founding Director of American Explorers LLC from January 2014 to June 2015. Luke O'Neill founded and served as the CEO & Founder of Shackleton Schools, Inc. from October 1995 to June 2005. Luke started their career as an Associate Attorney at Whitman Breed Abbott & Morgan LLC, specializing in corporate law from 1984 to 1988.

Luke O'Neill has an extensive education history. Luke obtained their Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Economics from Georgetown University in 1981. Luke then attended Georgetown University Law Center from 1981 to 1984, where they received their Juris Doctor (JD) degree. Later, they pursued further education at Harvard Business School from 1993 to 1995, earning their Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

In addition to their academic achievements, Luke has obtained various certifications throughout their career. In 2005, they obtained their OWSI certification from PADI. Luke also holds a Marine Radio Operator Permit from the Federal Communications Commission, obtained in 2007. In 2008, Luke received a Leave No Trace certification from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Other certifications include Emergency Water Safety from the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School in 2012, Emergency First Response - Instructor from PADI in 2013, Maine Guide - Sea Kayaking certification from the State of Maine in 2013, Wilderness First Responder from S.O.L.O. in 2014, and CPR - BLS Provider from the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association in 2019.
