The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) unites every company and country in the world with an operating commercial nuclear power plant to achieve the highest possible standards of nuclear safety. 

Based in London with regional centres in Moscow, Atlanta, Tokyo and Paris, WANO cuts across political barriers and interests. The organisation exists purely to help its members accomplish the highest levels of operational safety and reliability. This is achieved through a series of programmes which include peer reviews, technical support and access to a global library of operating experience.

WANO is a non-profit organisation. A Governing Board sets policies which are implemented across the regional centres. Day-to-day work in these centres is overseen by WANO’s Executive Leadership Team and the programmes are managed by permanent and seconded employees drawn from members around the world.

While WANO works directly with its members, the organisation is not a regulatory body and does not advise companies on issues such as initial reactor design selection.

With safety as the only goal, WANO helps operators communicate effectively and share information openly. Experience shows many accidents could have been prevented if lessons had been learned from previous incidents. Ultimately, this will raise the performance of all operators to that of the best.

The Operations and Event Management team at WANO is responsible for coordinating and managing various programs and events that promote nuclear safety and operational excellence among member organizations. This includes organizing international conferences and training sessions, facilitating the sharing of operational experiences, and ensuring smooth internal operations to support WANO’s mission. They play a critical role in fostering collaboration and communication across the global nuclear industry to enhance safety standards and operational reliability.
