Catharine Bond Hill

Professor Catharine B Hill is the Managing Director of Ithaka S + R. Ithaka S + R works to increase access and affordability of higher education and improve student outcomes through research and consulting. It assists the academic community to navigate economic and technological change. Prior to this Professor Hill had served as President of Vassar College since 2006. After graduating summa cum laude from Williams College, Professor Hill earned BA and MA degrees at Brasenose College, University of Oxford, with first-class honours in politics, philosophy, and economics. She completed her PhD in economics at Yale University. A noted economist, her research on the affordability of and access to higher education has been influential in expanding opportunities for students from all socio–economic backgrounds to attend college. Her scholarly work also focuses on economic development and reform in Africa. Previously, Professor Hill worked for the World Bank and the Fiscal Analysis Division of the US Congressional Budget Office before serving as Provost of Williams College, where she had chief academic and financial officer responsibilities. Professor Hill has also lived in the Republic of Zambia, where she headed the Harvard Institute for International Development’s Project on Macroeconomic Reform. Professor Hill has received scholarly awards, grants and fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, Brookings Institution, National Science Foundation and Social Science Research Council, among other organisations. She previously served on the board of the College Board and the NCAA Division III Presidents Council. Professor Hill was also elected an Alumni Fellow of the Yale Corporation in 2013.
