Nelson began their work experience in 1995 as a Senior Designer at The Media Communications and stayed until 1997. Nelson. then worked at NBCi as an Art Director from 1999 to 2001. In 2001, they joined York and Chapel as a Managing Partner and Senior Creative Director. Nelson. also served as an Instructor at UC Berkeley from 2001 to 2003, at San Jose State University in 2004, and at Emily Carr Institute from 2008 to 2009. In 2003, they became an Instructor at Art Institute and remained until 2005. From 2011 to 2013, Nelson worked as a Seasonal Instructor at The Art Institute of Vancouver and also as an Instructor at University of the Fraser Valley in 2011.

Nelson began their education at Killarney in 1989, although no degree or field of study is mentioned. From 1990 to 1992, they attended The University of British Columbia with a focus on Art History and Art Studio, but did not obtain a degree. Nelson then pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Graphic Arts at Concordia University from 1992 to 1995. Finally, they completed a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in Graphic Design at the California Institute of the Arts from 1997 to 1999.
