Joe began their career as a Mechanical Engineer at Parsons Energy & Chemicals, where they were involved in the design, field engineering, and construction management of large-scale power plants. Following this, they worked as a Research Assistant at the University of California, Irvine, focusing on high-altitude fuel cell applications and teaching thermodynamics.

Joe then joined the University of Michigan - Shanghai Jiaotong University Joint Institute as an Assistant Professor, where they conducted research in alternative energy systems and taught mechanical engineering classes. During their time there, they received recognition for their effective communication and teaching style.

Afterwards, Joe worked at Sandia National Laboratories as the Founder and Manager of the Zero Emission Maritime Program, as well as the Manager of the US DOE's Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure Research and Station Technology initiative. Joe Pratt continued their studies at UC Irvine and completed a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, graduating between 2004 and 2008.
