Dave Schachner

Dave Schachner has a diverse work experience in the legal field, starting with their current role as Deputy General Counsel at Zuora since 2022. Prior to this, they worked as a Senior Legal Counsel at VMware from 2020 to 2022.

Before joining VMware, Dave held various roles at Pivotal from 2014 to 2020, including Counsel and Associate Counsel. In these roles, they specialized in intellectual property (IP) and product law, dealing with both technical and non-technical clients. Dave was responsible for managing open source software (OSS) matters, including license compatibility, compliance, and strategic decision-making.

Dave also worked at VMware in 2013 as an Associate Counsel, where they supported the transition of engineering, product, and management teams to the spin-off entity, Pivotal. Dave advised on open-source software use, contribution, and distribution.

In 2012, Dave served as a Lead Identification Engineer at Broadcom Limited, where they managed and tracked inbound and outbound OSS, proprietary code, and third-party IP. Dave worked with engineers across global offices to resolve licensing matters and improve software capabilities.

Dave began their legal career as a Summer Associate at Bingham McCutchen in 2010, where they conducted research and drafted memoranda on patent matters. Dave also reviewed client documents and agreements for corporate transactions.

Prior to their legal career, Dave worked as a Products and Transactional Legal Intern at Yahoo! in 2009, where they advised on risks and liabilities for internet service providers under copyright laws. Dave also provided guidance on contracts and licenses.

Dave's early work experience includes roles at Georgetown University, where they served as a Student Information Services Manager from 2006 to 2008. Dave was responsible for troubleshooting networking issues, managing student employees, and conveying technical concepts to non-technical individuals. Dave also worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Computer Science Department during the fall semester of 2006.

Dave Schachner earned their Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Government from Georgetown University from 2004 to 2008. Dave then went on to attend Santa Clara University School of Law from 2008 to 2011, where they obtained their Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in Law.
