American Express Adds Diversity-Minded Board Member

American Express has a fresh face on its Board of Directors following the election of Lisa Wardell, the Chairman and CEO of Adtalem Global Education. She officially joined the payments giant’s Board of Directors on March 8, 2021, and serves on the Board’s Risk Committee.

Wardell brings a wealth of experience leading large-scale business transformations as well as implementing and advancing diversity at global companies. In a statement, American Express Chairman and CEO Stephen J. Squeri said that these experiences along with her investment knowledge will be key assets to the company’s Board.

As the CEO of Adtalem, she has been a leading provider of workforce solutions and educational services since 2016. Under her leadership Adtalem has grown its presence in the financial services vertical through acquisitions and integrations. She has also pushed the company to implement diverse representation among its senior leadership and Board. Prior to Adtalem, Wardell was the COO of The RLJ Companies, a strategic investment firm. She also worked as a Principal at private-equity firm Katalyst Venture Partners, served as a Senior Consultant in Accenture’s communications and technology strategic services practice, and spent time as an Attorney for the Federal Communications Commission.

She currently serves on the boards of Lowe’s and the NBA’s THINK450 innovation and business development arm. She is also a member of the Executive Committee of The Business Council, The Executive Leadership Council, and CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion.
