After 23 years, AWS veteran Charlie Bell has reportly decided to leave Amazon’s cloud computing unit, sparking an executive reshuffle.

Bell had overseen the development of many of the services AWS offers including computing to storage and databases.

In his place, SVP Peter DeSantis will lead the utility computing unit while VP Prasad Kalyanaraman will step up to replace DeSantis at the head of the company’s infrastructure and network service. Both DeSantis and Kalyanaraman will report to AWS CEO Adam N. Selipsky.

Bell initially joined Amazon in 1998 as a director of software engineering after his company, Server Technologies Group, was acquired.

He was considered by some to be a contender to replace Andy Jassey as the CEO of AWS after Jassy was promoted to replace Jeff Bezos as the CEO of Amazon. He now joins a pack of at least 45 Amazon executives who have left for new careers outside the tech giant since the start of 2020.
