Online chat service Discord has revealed that it has found its first Chief Financial Officer, Tomasz (Tom) Marcinkowski, who joined the company almost two weeks ago.

As CFO, Marcinkowski will lead Discord’s financial operations and use his extensive expertise in growing, scaling, and advising leading internet companies to support the platform’s continued growth.

A native of Poland, Marcinkowski joins Discord from Pinterest where he spent the last five years as the social media site’s Head of Finance. He also served as a VP of Technology in Goldman Sachs' Investment Banking division for almost a decade. In this role, he advised a broad range of clients in the tech sector including Square, Yelp, and HP.

Marcinkowski first discovered Discord as a San Jose Earthquakes fan looking for a sense of community and said in a Q&A that he “found it curious that very few companies were able to really crack community building across the social landscape. That’s when I really started to understand the unique value proposition of Discord, a service centered around communities of interest.”

Looking forward, he said he believes there is “an incredible opportunity ahead for this company. What I’m focused on is making sure we’re using the business to support the company’s mission, to create a space for communities and a place where people can find belonging. I want to help build a business to support this mission, not the other way around.”

Discord describes 2020 as a pivotal year for the company, in which it reached over 140 million monthly active users and exceeded $100 million in revenue. The messaging platform experienced a jolt in popularity outside of its core gamer user base due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among these new users were university clubs, activists, and even couples hosting virtual wedding ceremonies.
