On Monday, Meta’s Eddie Garcia joined eBay as the e-commerce marketplace’s Chief Product Officer.
Reporting directly to CEO Jamie Iannone, Garcia will lead eBay's Core Product organization as it works to streamline the user experience.
Garcia brings more than two decades of product leadership experience, including more than a decade in eBay’s product organization—from 2003 to 2014, he held roles on the website’s search and buyer experience teams. Between his two stints at eBay, Garcia was the SVP of Product Development at Travelzoo and the Chief Product Officer at Sam's Club. He most recently was Head of Commerce for Meta’s core Facebook app, placing him in charge of Facebook Marketplace.
In the company’s announcement, Iannone said he was “thrilled” to have Garcia back at eBay and said, “His passion for building successful product teams dedicated to customers fits perfectly with our growth strategy.”
eBay, hot off a better-than-expected fiscal year, is looking to improve its share of the U.S. e-commerce market and chase down market leader Amazon. Last year Amazon accounted for approximately 41% of U.S. e-commerce retail sales, a staggering lead over eBay, which sat in third with just 4.2%, per eMarketer.
Garcia’s work at eBay could help the storied internet brand as it looks to close the gap on Amazon and fend off new rivals with new tools and features, including its recently launched trending card authentication service. In November 2021, the company also closed a deal to buy Sneaker Con’s authentication business to improve buyer confidence in its platform and compete with upstart competitors like StockX.
"I am proud to join an eBay team that puts an outstanding customer experience at the center of everything they do," Garcia said. "As eBay's tech-led reimagination comes to life, I am excited to continue to build upon the successful strategy the team has been implementing and unlock new opportunities to deliver for our customers and communities."
