To better harness the growing power of data in its business, digital auto insurer Metromile has hired Gina Minick as its new VP of Telematics.

As a member of Metromile’s Product team, Minick’s work to further integrate telematics data into the company’s operations and in turn help it more accurately price risk. This can have knock-on effects that are felt by the consumer, such as shorter claims cycles and extended customer lifecycles.

“Telematics is the future of auto insurance,” Minick said in an interview. “The data is so powerful. We know it’s the most predictive data that we can use to assess risk. Having telematics at the forefront of our insurance product at Metromile is so exciting.”

Metromile's current telematics product, called Pulse, allows the company to securely record the number of miles a car travels to accurately price out its pay-per-mile insurance offering. Additionally, when paired with the company’s AI, called AVA, also lets the company digitally reconstruct crash scenes through a mix of sensor data and damage photos, to more efficiently process claims.

Minick joins the company from Arity, where she led the mobility and driver data analytic firm’s telematics product team. Before that, she served as a Digital Product Manager at Allstate, during her almost 10 years with the company she was responsible for the implementation and iteration of Drivewise, Allstate's usage-based insurance program. Minick got her start in the insurance industry at Progressive, where she spent 3 years as a Comparison Rating and Product Analyst.

“In the past, I was helping insurance companies design their telematics programs for their customers,” Minick added, discussing her decision to join Metromile. “Here, I get to create products that live into Metromile’s unique pay-per-mile offering.”

Continuing the company’s disruptive entry into the insurance market, earlier this year Metromile announced it will let its customers pay premiums and receive claim payouts with cryptocurrency.
