Deborah Turness, president of NBC News International, is crossing the pond yet again and returning to the UK’s Independent Television Network (ITN) as CEO starting April 19.

She will be replacing Anna Mallet who joined the British independent television company as CEO in 2019. Mallet came to ITN from BBC Studios and will start her new job as Netflix’s VP of Physical Production in its London office on April 16.

Turness started her journalism career at ITN as a freelancer, and later as a reporter for the North of England Bureau. She served as ITN’s Washington Bureau producer during the Clinton Administration and spent time in Bosnia during the Balkans War. She became the UK’s first female editor of a news network in 2004 when she was promoted to ITV News Editor (ITN’s news program) and was the youngest-ever editor of ITV News.

She found her way to NBC News in 2013 where she led a team of over 3,000 people and oversaw all editorial content and commercial revenues for Today, NBC News Nightly with Lester Holt, Meet The Press, and Dateline. These four programs all regained top-ratings status in the US news market under her tenure.

“Deborah has impeccable credentials as a strategic leader, with journalistic nous and a keen business mind,” said Kyla Mullins, Chair of the ITN Board. “She will bring huge passion, energy and knowledge to the company and I know she is very excited to be returning and cannot wait to get started.”

Turness said in a statement ITN’s role in public life “has never been more critical” and that she feels “privileged and proud” to return to the company and lead as CEO.
