In-home fitness tech unicorn Tonal has recruited M. Andrea Soria from Calm as its first-ever Director of Legal.
In-home fitness tech unicorn Tonal has recruited ex-Calm legal exec M. Andrea Soria as its first-ever Director of Legal, per Bloomberg.
Soria joins Tonal, which has had a frenzied past year including a $250 million Series E fundraising round that closed in March 2021.
Lately, the $1.6 billion fit tech startup has seen a surge in demand for its wall-mounted, all-in-one gym equipment amid the COVID-19 pandemic that forced many gym goers to work out at home. In 2020, sales of the company’s workout machine, which utilizes AI and patented digital weight, spiked 8 fold. The company was also able to ink a deal with Nordstrom to sell the machine in stores.
Before Tonal, Soria was the top legal executive at wellness app Calm until she left around a year ago. Prior to that, she spent 10 years at video game developer Glu Mobile as well as stints at Intero Real Estate Services, which was bought by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, and law firm McManis Faulkner.
Soria’s hire could signal that Tonal is looking to shift away from its current legal advisors and build up an internal unit prior to a major undertaking, like an IPO for instance. Bloomberg notes that Tonal has been utilizing external counsel up until now, including Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian for its corporate matters and Morrison & Foerster for trademarks.
