Jonathan Bing has resigned as Netflix’s Director of Communications to become Vice Media Group’s Chief Communications Officer, according to a report by Deadline.

A veteran media executive, Bing joins the digital media company that owns Vice and Refinery29 after more than three years at Netflix.

Before joining the streaming giant in 2019, he was the SVP of Communications at Fox Network Group and ran his own firm, Freud Communications, where he worked with film giants Sony Pictures Entertainment and Disney.

In a statement provided to Deadline, Vice CEO Nancy Dubuc highlighted Bing’s “global communications knowledge” and said, “his well-rounded knowledge of news, film, television, and culture will directly and positively impact our business as we continue to grow and reach new milestones.”

Bing’s departure from Netflix follows a rough few months for the streamer, which recently reported its first quarterly loss of subscribers in a decade, leading to layoffs in its marketing arm, including Tudum, its recently launched news website.

Bing will have his work cut out for him at Vice as the digital media company is reportedly looking to sell itself, hiring financial advisors in May. Vice reached a deal to go public via a SPAC merger last year but eventually shelved the plans after the red-hot SPAC market cooled considerably. Once worth $5.7 billion, the company has seen its value decline over the past few years, and conducted layoffs in 2020 and 2021.
