A Second Chance
Shay Helenkamp has been with the agency for 5 years. She started as a caseworker and quickly moved up the ladder at the agency. Helenkamp attended Slippery Rock University and received her Bachelors of Science with a focus in Social Work. She has worked in social services since graduating in 2008, starting in residential treatment facilities then solely working with agencies that were eager to keep families together.
Currently, Helenkamp supervises two supervisors and two support team members. Her responsibilities include overseeing the supportive departments in order to assist with certification and recertification and assisting in ensuring that our children have a forever home.
The reason she loves working for ASCI is that the agency is truly dedicated to helping families stay together. Helenkamp’s sister was adopted at birth and Helenkamp believes that if there was no family member to take her sister in, she would have been with placed with strangers. Helenkamp’s grandmother has been a caregiver through the agency for years.

A Second Chance, Inc. (ASCI), is a nonprofit corporation established in 1994. Its mission is to provide a safe, secure and nurturing environment to children in the care of relatives or close family friends—formally called kinship care. ASCI is the largest provider of kinship support services to all of Allegheny County, Pa., where it is also headquartered.
