Carolyn McCarty

Senior Manager, School Health Initiatives at AAP

Carolyn McCarty has an extensive work experience in various roles related to public health and disability. Carolyn currently serves as a Senior Manager of School Health Initiatives at the American Academy of Pediatrics since February 2022. Previously, they worked as a Manager of Child and Family Health Initiatives at the same organization from April 2019 to February 2022.

Before joining the American Academy of Pediatrics, Carolyn held the position of Community Health and Prevention Supervisor at the Winnebago County Health Department. Carolyn was responsible for overseeing community health and prevention initiatives from March 2016 to April 2019.

Carolyn's career also includes experiences at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Carolyn served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer from July 2014 to March 2016. Carolyn McCarty began their education journey in 2001 when they enrolled at Miami University. Carolyn pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science, which they successfully completed in 2005.

Building on their undergraduate studies, Carolyn then attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 2005 to 2006. During this time, they obtained a Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology.

Continuing their academic pursuits, Carolyn joined the University of Illinois Chicago in 2008. There, they spent five years working towards their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Disability Studies, with a focus on Health Promotion. Carolyn successfully completed their Ph.D. in 2013.

In addition to their formal academic qualifications, Carolyn has obtained several certifications to enhance their skill set. In December 2006, they became a Certified Spinning Instructor through Maddog Athletics. During the same period, they also obtained the Certified Personal Trainer designation from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

At some point in their educational journey, Carolyn also became a Certified Lifeguard, although the specific date of this certification remains unknown.
