Alistair McKinlay has a diverse work experience in various roles and industries. In 2003, they worked as a Golf Shop Intern at Twin Orchard Country Club, where they developed their knowledge of golf and interpersonal skills. From 2006 to 2009, they volunteered at St Andrews as a Demonstrator and provided instructions to students in the Inorganic Chemistry module. In 2008 and 2009, Alistair served as the Chemsoc President at the University of St Andrews, where they managed the student Chemical Society and organized lectures and events. From 2010 to 2012, they worked as a Post-doctoral researcher at the University of St Andrews, focusing on synthesizing and characterizing multifunctional inorganic/organic hybrid materials. During this time, they also mentored and managed PhD and undergraduate students. Since 2012, Alistair has been working at ABGI-UK as an Innovation Funding Consultant and Technical Analyst, assisting clients in securing funding for their innovation projects.

Alistair McKinlay completed their education in a chronological order. Alistair first attended Strathaven Academy from 1999 to 2002, where they completed their School SQA exams. After that, they enrolled at the University of St Andrews from 2002 to 2006 and obtained a BSc Joint Hons in Chemistry and Mathematics. Following their undergraduate studies, Alistair McKinlay pursued further education at the same university and earned a PhD in Materials Science Chemistry from 2006 to 2010.
