Paddy Byers

Co-founder and Chief Scientist at Ably Realtime

Paddy Byers has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Paddy started their career as a System Engineer at Smith System Engineering where they led multiple projects in the information systems technology group. In 1993, they co-founded Reference Information Systems, a technical consulting company where they served as a Director and grew the company to have 5 permanent consultant employees.

In 2000, Paddy joined Tao Group as the CTO and executive director, overseeing all technical aspects of the company's products and leading a team of 50 engineers. Their responsibilities included defining the technical and techno-commercial strategy, technology development, and IP policy.

After leaving Tao Group in 2007, Paddy took on the role of General Manager, Europe R&D at Aplix, where they had regional responsibility for technical leadership and coordination of the group's R&D activities. Paddy also played a key role in the creation of the OMTP BONDI specification for Web Applications and Widgets.

In 2011, Paddy founded Meshpoint Ltd, an independent technical consulting and development company specializing in security, web technology, and standards. Their expertise includes node.js, Eclipse, Java, and embedded systems.

Paddy's entrepreneurial spirit continued with the founding of UbiApps in 2012, where they served as the Founder. Finally, they co-founded Ably - simply better realtime in 2012 and currently holds the role of Co-founder and Chief Scientist.

Paddy Byers pursued their education starting from 1984 to 1987 at the University of Cambridge, where they completed their MA degree in Mathematics. Following this, they continued their academic journey from 1987 to 1990 at the University of Surrey, obtaining a PhD in Theoretical Computer Science.
