Billy Barnhardt began their career in 2004 as a Senior Security Engineer at OCTI, where they supported the DIACAP Certification and Accreditation of the Army Knowledge Online (AKO) web portal. In 2006, they joined Knowledge Consulting Group as a Senior Security Engineer, where they provided technical supervision of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Operation Center and served as the Incident Response Coordinator for TSA.

During this time, they conducted research to understand malware and protected TSA. From 2010 to 2012, they worked at Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) as an Authorization and Accreditation Lead, overseeing the certification and accreditation task for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN).
In 2012, Barnhardt joined The Ventura Group as a Contractor, serving as the Information Assurance Technical Lead. Later that year, they moved to Avineon Inc. as a Contractor, working as an Information System Security Officer for the Treasury Secure Data Network (TSDN) of the US Treasury.
From 2013 to 2014, Barnhardt worked at Smartronix Inc. as a Cyber Security Task Lead for the USMC Network and Security Operation Center (MCNOSC) HQ. During this time, they managed a team of 16 subject matter experts and specialized in system and network engineering, computer network defense, and certification and accreditation.
In 2014, Barnhardt joined Santee Cooper as a Sr. Cyber Security Analyst, where they focused on the security of the state-owned electric and water utility of South Carolina. Billy Barnhardt produced daily threat prevention reports and coordinated with organizations like the FBI, US-CERT, and E-ISAC.
In 2015, Barnhardt joined Accelera Solutions as an Information Assurance Manager, overseeing data security for the Military Health Virtualized Services (MHVs) Application Virtualization Hosting Environment (AVHE). Billy Barnhardt also served as an Information System Security Officer (ISSO) and conducted authorization and accreditation packages, risk and security assessments, and certifications based on the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and DIACAP.
Billy Barnhardt has an extensive education history in the field of cybersecurity and finance. Billy Barnhardt began their educational journey at Capitol Technology University, where they obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Finance from 1981 to 1986. Later, they pursued a Master's Degree in Computer and Information Systems Security/Information Assurance from the same university, completing it from 2008 to 2010.
Continuing their education, Barnhardt is currently working towards a Doctoral Candidate in Cybersecurity at Capitol Technology University, which they started in 2011.
