Nick Mathern

Executive Director Of K-12 Partnerships at Achieving the Dream

Nick Mathern has a diverse work experience spanning over 25 years. Nick started their career as a Children's Advocate at Children and Families of Iowa in 1995, where they worked as an advocate and educator for children staying in a domestic abuse shelter. Nick also facilitated support groups for children of domestic abuse survivors and implemented violence-prevention curriculum for teen boys. From 1997 to 1999, Nick worked as a Family Advocate at LifeWorks NW. In 1999, they joined LEC Lents Education Center, Janus Youth Programs as a Teacher. Nick remained in that role until 2003 when they became an English Teacher at Highcamp Kindergarten. In 2005, Nick joined Portland Community College as a Gateway to College Replication Training Coordinator where they stayed until 2008. From 2008 to 2010, Nick worked at Gateway to College National Network as the Director of New Program Development. Nick then moved on to become the Associate Vice President for Policy and Partnership Development, where they developed and executed the organization's policy agenda and established partnerships with colleges, school districts, and state education agencies until 2016. From 2017 to 2019, Nick served as the Vice President of Programs at Gateway to College National Network. Most recently, they have worked at Achieving the Dream since 2019 as the Executive Director of K-12 Partnerships.

Nick Mathern completed their Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Drake University in the years 1992 to 1996. Prior to that, they attended Waseca HS from 1988 to 1992, but did not earn a degree or specify a field of study. Later, they pursued further education, earning a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Portland State University from 2007 to 2011. No specific field of study is mentioned for their Master's degree.
