After completing their MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2000, Steve joined Chipshot.com, an e-commerce startup backed by Sequoia Capital, as their online marketing manager. In 2001, they left Chipshot to join Bang Networks, an Internet-based broadcast technology company also backed by Sequoia Capital, as their business development manager.

In 2002, Steve founded Galt Media, Inc., a performance-based Internet marketing company specializing in online lead generation. Steve ran Galt Media for three years before selling the company in 2005.

Mike Betts is Sr. Backend Engineer at [ActiveProspect](/org/activeprospect). Prior to that, they were Chief Technology Officer at [CÜR Media](/org/cur-media) from January 2012 to December 2017. There, they led the development of a social music app for iOS, Android, and Web. Mike was responsible for overall technical strategy, product architecture, infrastructure, teams, processes, tools, culture, and vendors. Some highlights from their time there include being instrumental in raising over $30 million in venture capital and building a consumer app that reached 240k MAUs. Mike also scaled a remote engineering team from 2 to 50+ and built a globally distributed engineering organization with a mix of FTEs, contractors, and offshore teams. Mike implemented an agile scrum process with cross-functional teams and worked closely with the Product team to establish features, roadmap, release plans, and UX. Mike also partnered with music labels (Universal, Sony, Warner) on technical features, security, and reporting. In addition, they led security initiatives to meet stringent music label requirements, from white paper to compliance. 

When it came to the backend, Mike designed a scalable, performant, and highly available backend using SOA, accessible via a RESTful API. Mike also built a subscription payment service supporting in-app purchases, credit cards, and PayPal. The infrastructure was AWS-based and scalable to 10s of millions of users with 99.999% uptime. Mike automated infrastructure creation and deployment using a DevOps “infrastructure as code” approach. Finally, they integrated detailed product analytics and marketing automation into apps, backend, and admin system. The tech stack used included Vue.js, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Node.js, Java/Spring, Python/Django, Redis, MySQL, Elasticsearch, Cassandra, Objective-C, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, CloudFormation, Redshift, AWS.
