Brad Warthen started their work experience in 1974 as a copy clerk at The Commercial Appeal. In 1987, they worked as an assistant metro editor at The Wichita Eagle, where they supervised a team of reporters covering state government and politics. From 1997 to 2009, they held the position of VP/Editorial Page Editor at The State, South Carolina's largest newspaper, where they supervised the editorial department, chaired the editorial board, and wrote a weekly column and a political blog. In 2005, they started working as an editor and publisher for their own website, bradwarthen.com. In 2010, they became the Director of Communications/Public Relations at ADCO Ideas | Interactive. In 2018, they briefly worked as the Communications Director for James Smith's South Carolina campaign.
Brad Warthen attended Radford High School from 1970 to 1971 and earned their high school diploma. Brad then went on to study journalism and history at Memphis State University from 1972 to 1975, where they obtained a Bachelor's degree in these fields.
