Richard Gaston has held several roles throughout their work experience. Richard started their career as a Graduate Trainee at the University of Exeter in 1999 and completed their role in 2000. Richard then joined Lehman Brothers as a Researcher from 2001 to 2006. In 2007, Richard became an Investment Services Manager at the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and held this role until 2011. Richard then moved on to Addleshaw Goddard, where they worked as a Research & Knowledge Manager from 2011 to 2017, and eventually became the Head of Knowledge & Research in February 2017.

Richard Gaston pursued their education in several institutions. From 1996 to 1999, they attended the University of Warwick and obtained a BA(Hons) degree in English & American Literature. Later, in 2000-2001, they enrolled at Loughborough University and earned an MA degree in Information & Library Studies. Additionally, Richard acquired several certifications throughout their career, including the Manchester Leadership Development Programme from the Alliance Manchester Business School in 2021 and the ILM Approved Addleshaw Goddard Coaching Development Programme from The Institute of Leadership & Management in 2020. Richard also became an Affiliate Member of the Association of Facilitators in 2018 and achieved MCILIP status from CILIP: The library and information association in 2004.
