Helen Lurie has a diverse work experience in various engineering roles. Helen started their career at ITT as a Student Engineer, where they worked on radar systems engineering and created visual representations of ocean clutter and antenna patterns. Helen then joined UCLA as a Graduate Student Researcher, where they focused on optical time-stretch analog to digital conversion in the Optoelectronics Circuits and Systems Laboratory.
Helen then joined Space Exploration Technologies, where they served as a Telemetry Systems Engineer & Recovery Crew RF Engineer. In this role, they designed, built, and tested the telemetry system for the Falcon-9 rocket and participated in launch crew activities for Falcon-1 launches. Helen also successfully tracked a re-entering rocket stage using a handheld tracking dish.
After that, Helen worked at Planet Labs as an RF Team Lead. Helen led a team responsible for designing, building, and testing a communications system for delivering earth imagery from space. Helen also worked on systems design, FCC filings, and the development of working hardware installed in spacecraft.
Helen then founded their own company, BitBeam, where they worked as a Founder & Electrical Systems Consultant. Helen provided consulting services in electrical systems and managed the company from 2013 to 2017.
Most recently, Helen worked at Lyft as a Compute Engineer and later as a Compute Team Manager. In their role, they led a team of compute, machine learning, and electrical engineers who designed and delivered deep learning compute and networking hardware for in-vehicle inference for Lyft Level 5 autonomous technologies.
Helen Lurie earned a Master's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from UCLA between 2001 and 2008. Before that, they completed a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from UCLA. Additionally, they also obtained a Bachelor's degree in Physics from UCLA, although the start and end years for both Bachelor's degrees were not provided.
