Dr. Andrew Cunningham

Global Lead, Education at Aga Khan Foundation

Dr. Andrew Cunningham has a diverse background in education and research. Dr. Andrew started their career in 2012 as a Research Assistant at the University of Oxford, where they analyzed data on UK student teachers' perceptions of factors influencing educational outcomes. From there, they worked as an International Education Consultant for Investisseurs & Partenraires, where they completed a report on innovation in education for Kenya.

Dr. Cunningham also worked as an Education Consultant for UNICEF, where they focused on quality education and child-friendly schools. Dr. Andrew played a key role in developing a national strategy for using mobile phones to monitor and evaluate education in Kenya, as well as coordinating workshops and competitions for champion head teachers. Dr. Andrew also provided technical support for UNICEF projects and contributed to communication and advocacy efforts.

Additionally, Dr. Cunningham served as a Senior Education Researcher for the Education Above All Foundation, where they synthesized research and authored reports on global educational research and policy.

Dr. Andrew has also held curator roles for TEDxOxford and TEDxOxbridge, showcasing their interest in spreading innovative ideas and fostering dialogue.

Most recently, Dr. Cunningham has been working as the Global Lead for Education at the Aga Khan Foundation, focusing on education initiatives worldwide.

Dr. Andrew Cunningham earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education from the University of Oxford from 2011 to 2018. Prior to their PhD, they obtained a Master of Science (MSc.) in Comparative International Education from the same institution in 2010 and 2011. Dr. Andrew completed their undergraduate studies at Duke University, earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in International Comparative Studies and Chinese from 2004 to 2008. Dr. Cunningham also holds a second Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Robertson Scholars from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which they completed in the same period.
