Started his career in the defence services in 1967 as a commissioned officer and while being Major participated in the Indo-Pak war of 1971 during the liberation of Bangladesh. In 1972 cleared the IAS examination and opted to join IPS of 1968 batch and was allotted to Karnataka cadre. Starting from the rank of ASP went on to become SP, DIG, IGP, Additional DGP, DGP and finally became the DG & IGP of the Karnataka state police during the years 2004/5 before retiring in May 2005. Had a distinguished service of 38 years during which a number of new welfare measures for subordinates were introduced. Also, took concrete steps to improve the police public relations while ensuring that law & order and crime situation in the state was kept under control. While being the commissioner of Youth services and Sports organized the ivth National games at Bangalore in which teams from all the states took part. It was during this period that for the first time in Karnataka such a world-class infrastructure like the Karnataka Indoor/Outdoor, koramangala Indoor and Astro-turf Hockey stadiums came up in Bangalore. Finally it was during his tenure as the DG & IGP of the state that the most wanted and notorious forest brigand Veerappan was eliminated in a well co-ordinated operation with Tamil Nadu Police and its government.
