Joshua Tokita

Joshua Tokita has extensive experience in the field of Otolaryngology, with their most recent role being the Medical Director of Otolaryngology at Alaska Native Medical Center since May 2022. Prior to this, they worked at Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) in various roles including Otolaryngologist, President of Medical Staff, and Vice President of Medical Staff from 2017 to 2020. Joshua also served as a Staff Otolaryngologist at Norton Sound Health Corporation and Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, both in 2017.

Before joining the healthcare industry, Joshua Tokita gained research experience at various institutions. Joshua worked at the American Academy of Otolaryngology as an Otology Subcommittee Member from 2012 to 2020. Joshua was a Resident Physician in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Iowa Health Care from 2010 to 2017, where they also undertook a research project as a Fellow from 2011 to 2013. Additionally, they served as a Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health from 2006 to 2008, and as a Research Assistant at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005. Prior to that, they were a Research Associate at UCLA in 2005.

Joshua Tokita's research work focused on various aspects of otolaryngology, including the molecular identity of tip links in inner ear hair cells, the role of protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor Q in auditory and vestibular pathology, the localization of calcitonin gene-related peptide and its receptor components in vestibular organs, and the use of unbiased stereological techniques to quantify cell numbers and obtain volumetric estimates of inner ear structures.

Joshua Tokita completed their high school education at the American School in Japan, where they earned a High School Diploma. Joshua then went on to attend Princeton University from 1999 to 2004, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and a minor in Russian Language. After that, Joshua attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine from 2004 to 2010, where they earned their MD degree in Medicine. Finally, they completed the Otolaryngology Residency Program at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine from 2010 to 2017, obtaining a certificate in Otolaryngology.
