Zhiguang Xu

Principal Engineer II At Alcon at Alcon

Zhiguang (William) Xu has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of engineering and optical science. Zhiguang (William) started their career as a Research Assistant at Tsinghua University, where they developed new metrology instruments and lasers. Zhiguang (William) later became a Research Staff, focusing on the instrumentation and commercialization of a displacement sensor.

After their time at Tsinghua University, Xu worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at MIT, where they developed metrology instruments based on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), white-light interferometry, and Moiré fringe method. These instruments were used for inspecting bonding interfaces, measuring nano-scale gaps, and quantifying micro-scale distortion in microfluidic devices.

Following their time at MIT, Xu joined Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine as a Staff Scientist, where they developed a label-free light sheet microscope and applied it to imaging cancer tumors and brain tissue at cellular resolution. Zhiguang (William) also used this microscope to detect neural activities in unlabeled brain tissue.

Xu then moved on to leading the engineering team at Scanogen Inc, where they developed a microscopy-based molecular diagnostic platform for rapid point-of-care genetic tests. The platform featured advanced lens design, low noise detection, and sophisticated image processing.

After Scanogen Inc, Xu joined Faro Technologies as a Senior Optical Systems Engineer, where they served as the team lead for the Optical Layout of new product development with Lidar technology. Zhiguang (William) developed advanced and compound systems using Lidar, microscopy, imaging technology, laser technology, polarization detection, and sophisticated system design.

Currently, Xu is working at Alcon as a Principal Engineer II, where they continue to contribute their expertise in optical science and engineering.

Overall, Xu's work experience showcases their expertise in developing advanced optical systems, instrumentation, and metrology instruments for various applications in industries such as medical imaging, molecular diagnostics, and product development.

Zhiguang (William) Xu completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Precision Instruments and Measurement Control Technology at Tsinghua University in the period from 1994 to 1999. Afterward, they pursued their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Optical Engineering, which they successfully completed at Tsinghua University from 1999 to 2006.
