Douglas Friesen, PhD, has a diverse work experience spanning various roles in the fields of quant research, machine learning, data science, software development, and biological computation. Douglas is currently working at AlphaLayer as a Senior Quant Researcher and was previously employed as a Senior Machine Learning Developer. Prior to that, Douglas ran their own consultancy firm, Douglas Friesen Solutions, where they served as the President and Data Scientist, providing consulting services on biological computation, pattern recognition, and financial trading algorithms. Additionally, Douglas worked as a Data Scientist at Mindable.com from 2017 to 2021. Douglas began their professional journey at Sybase as a Software Developer in 1997 and went on to hold similar roles at Aruna plc. and OpenText. Douglas also gained valuable research experience as a Ph.D. Experimental Oncology student at the University of Alberta, where their projects focused on subjects such as electrical communication in cells, cancer detection, stem cell regeneration, and computational drug discovery.

Douglas Friesen, PhD has an extensive educational background in various fields, with a focus on experimental oncology. Douglas attended the University of Alberta from 2009 to 2016, where they completed their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Experimental Oncology. Prior to that, they pursued post-degree studies in Biophysics, Advanced Quantum Theory, and Quantum Information at the University of Waterloo from 2008 to 2009. In 2004 to 2005, they engaged in further post-degree studies at the same university, this time focusing on Quantum Mechanics, Applied Math, and Biology. In their earlier years, Friesen successfully obtained a Bachelor of Mathematics (B.Math) degree from the University of Waterloo from 1996 to 2001, with Double Honors in Computer Science and Combinatorics & Optimization, earning a commendation for their outstanding performance.

In addition to their formal education, Friesen also holds several certifications in various areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Douglas has completed multiple courses and specializations offered by Coursera, such as Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning, Convolutional Neural Networks, and Introduction to Machine Learning in Production. Douglas has also obtained certifications in AI for Medical Treatment, Diagnosis, and Prognosis, as well as the AI for Medicine Specialization. Friesen's commitment to educational and professional development is evident through their continued pursuit of knowledge and skill acquisition in emerging fields.
