Julio Gutierrez MD has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of liver disease and transplantation. Julio is currently working as a Transplant Hepatologist and Clinical Associate Professor at Scripps Health, specializing in the care of patients with chronic liver disease and the need for liver transplant. Julio is also the Director of the Ambulatory Care Pathway at Scripps Mercy, ensuring that patients with chronic diseases have access to medications and ancillary support. Additionally, they serve as a Liver Cancer Specialist at the Prebys Cancer Center.

In 2023, Julio Gutierrez MD will be joining Livivos, Inc as the Director of Clinical Development, overseeing the introduction of the LiverScope®, an innovative liver disease diagnostic device. Julio will be responsible for revolutionizing how liver disorders are detected, graded, and managed.

Julio Gutierrez MD also holds positions at Altimmune, Inc. where they serve as the Medical Director for obesity and liver-related studies and as the Global Medical Lead for the Hepatitis B HepTcell Program.

Before their current roles, Julio Gutierrez MD founded CalSci and has also held positions as the Vice President of Clinical Research & Clinical Science at ProSciento, Inc., an Adjunct Assistant Professor at UC San Diego, the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at St. Vincent Medical Center, a Transplant Hepatologist at Sharp HealthCare, and a Clinical Assistant Professor at UTHSCSA CENTER FOR MEDICAL. Julio has also served as the Director of Hepatobiliary Cancer at The Texas Liver Institute.

Julio Gutierrez MD earned their Bachelor of Arts degree in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. Julio then pursued their Medical Doctor degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 2004 to 2007, specializing in Hepatology during their research fellowship under Dr. Andrea Branch. Following this, they completed the Physician Scientist Training Program at UC San Diego from 2007 to 2013. Julio furthered their education and skills by obtaining a Master's degree in Human Nutrition from Columbia University in 2004 and a Transplant Hepatology Fellowship from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 2013. To enrich their knowledge and expertise in Gastroenterology, they also successfully completed a Fellowship at UC San Diego from 2009 to 2013. Additionally, they hold certifications in Obesity Medicine, Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, and Transplant Hepatology from various institutions.
