Walter G. Bumphus

Walter Bumphus began their work experience as the Vice President and Dean of Students at Howard Community College in 1987. Walter then went on to become the President of Brookhaven College in 1991, where they served until 1997. From 1997 to 2000, Bumphus worked as the President of the Higher Education Division at Voyager Expanded Learning. In 2000, they became the Chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College, a position they held until 2001. Bumphus then served as the System President of the Louisiana Community & Technical College System from 2001 to 2007. Following that role, they became a Professor and Chair of the Department of Education Administration at the University of Texas at Austin from 2007 to 2010. Currently, Bumphus is the President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges.

Walter Bumphus holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Community College Leadership Program from The University of Texas at Austin. Walter also earned a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Guidance and Counseling and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Speech Communications from Murray State University.
