Kevin Marvel has extensive experience in leadership and administration within scientific organizations. Currently serving as a member of the New Mexico State University College of Arts & Sciences National Advisory Board, Kevin contributes to long-range planning and community relations for the college. As the Executive Officer of the American Astronomical Society since 1998, Kevin has played a crucial role in advancing knowledge in the field. Previous positions include Deputy Executive Officer and Associate Executive Officer, where Kevin managed various administrative tasks and engaged in lobbying for increased funding for astronomy. Additionally, Kevin has served on the Executive Board of the National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, held leadership roles in the American Association of Variable Star Observers, and contributed to several other scientific organizations. Kevin holds a Ph.D. in Astronomy from New Mexico State University and has completed executive education at Harvard Business School.

The American Astronomical Society (AAS), established in 1899, is a major international organization of professional astronomers, astronomy educators, and amateur astronomers. Its membership of approximately 8,000 also includes physicists, geologists, engineers, and others whose interests lie within the broad spectrum of subjects now comprising the astronomical sciences. The mission of the AAS is to enhance and share humanity’s scientific understanding of the universe as a diverse and inclusive astronomical community, which it achieves through publishing, meetings, science advocacy, education and outreach, and training and professional development.
