Christopher Thornton

Senior Director Of U.s. Programs at American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)

Christopher Thornton currently serves as the Senior Director of U.S. Programs at the American Council of Learned Societies since July 2025. Prior to this role, Christopher held the position of Director of the Division of Research Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities from August 2018 to June 2025. Christopher's extensive experience includes serving as Acting VP of Grants and Senior Director of Social Sciences at the National Geographic Society, where responsibilities included managing a $15M grants program and leading initiatives in various social sciences. Christopher's early career involved roles such as Lead Program Officer and Program Officer at George Mason University. Christopher obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Philosophy in Archaeology from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor's degree in Archaeometry and Archaeology from Harvard University.
