Jonathan Stevens-Garcia

Jonathan Stevens-Garcia is the Chief Operating Officer for the American Society for Microbiology. In this role, he works to ensure that organizational priorities translate into clear, tangible, sustainable outcomes. He is a member of the CEO’s Direct Reports Team, and his direct reports include the Program Directors of the Academy, CPHM, Education, Meetings, Journals, and ASM Press.

Previous to ASM, Stevens-Garcia was SVP for Global Thought Leadership at AARP where he focused on building a network of global thought leaders to meet the challenges of global aging.

Before AARP, Stevens-Garcia was CIO for Family Matters of Greater Washington (FMGW); Director of the Global Futures Project at the Bertelsmann Foundation; and Policy Director for the Main Street Partnership.

He began his career as an epidemiologist at the CDC in Atlanta, and a math and science teacher at the Boston Renaissance Charter School in Boston.

He holds a B.S. in biophysics from Florida State University, an M.P.H. in epidemiology from University of South Florida, and an M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler School of Business.

In his spare time, he plays rugby, boxes, runs, rock climbs, and reads.
